Grantmaking: Making Grants that Strengthen Communities and Protect the Environment
The Rose Foundation is dedicated to the principle that environmental stewardship, community regeneration and robust civic participation are inextricably linked to a healthy economy. Community grantmaking programs are designed to strategically focus support towards projects and organizations that are building long-term solutions, and respect the rights of citizens and communities.

In addition to directly disbursing grants to qualifying organizations, the Rose Foundation is active in the foundation community around the issues of responsible philanthropy and corporate responsibility. Rose is a member of Philanthropy as Stewardship, and Foundation President, Jill Ratner, serves on the Steering Committee of the Foundation Partnership for Corporate Responsibility.

Restitution Funds Program
Many of Rose's grantmaking initiatives are enabled by restitution payments awarded by the courts. Rose acts as neutral trustee, reinvesting these funds back into neighborhoods and community-based organizations as grants. Specific grant cycles are often tailored to geographic or issue-based restrictions delineated in the settlement. Since launching the program in 1994, Rose has administered approximately $5,000,000 in restitution funds, enabling hundreds of grants to community organizations throughout California and the United States. In its capacity as trustee, Rose also administers technical assistance contracts to help community organizations gain access to scientific experts.

Fiscal Sponsorship Program
Part of Rose's guiding philosophy is that the most effective and innovative projects are often initiated at the grassroots community level. Many of these projects are catalyzed by volunteer activists or neighborhood organizations, and are too small or too new to have their charitable status recognized by the IRS. Often temporary in nature, undertaking the burden of developing a full-fledged non-profit corporation would constitute a severe strain on scarce community resources and divert focus from achieving program objectives.

In a fiscal sponsorship relationship, Rose extends its charitable umbrella over select California projects whose missions closely match the Foundation's own. Rose tailors an individualized package of management, fundraising and strategic planning assistance for each start-up or temporary project, while enabling the project to raise or accept tax-deductible donations.

Donor-Advised Program
The Rose Foundation works closely with individual donors to help them design and implement philanthropic goals. Some donors prefer to use Rose as their "checkbook," making a single annual donation and asking Rose to execute a series of sub-grants. In other cases, Rose partners with donors to build a permanent endowment, often in memory of a loved one. In either case, donors can take advantage of Rose's experience and flexibility in designing a fund that meets their own unique needs.
