Guidelines: How to Apply for a Grant

The mission of the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment is to nurture positive interactions between communities, the environment and the economy.

The Foundation emphasizes the following goals:

  • Fostering community and environmental stewardship.
  • Improving communications between businesses and their neighbors.
  • Recognizing individual responsibility for the environmental consequences of personal actions.
  • Forging positive links between environmental stewardship and sustainable job creation.
  • Harnessing economic power to leverage environmental sustainability.
  • Instilling respect for the inalienable rights protected by our nation’s constitution and the essential human rights to clean air, clean water and individual dignity.

Rose is a small foundation specializing in administering donor-restricted funds. Most of our grantmaking is limited to areas within the state of California. We accept funding applications from community-based organizations active in one or more of the following areas:

  • Protecting San Francisco Bay and its ecosystem.
  • Protecting Southern California coastal watersheds.
  • Community-based pollution prevention and environmental stewardship initiatives.
  • Protecting consumer privacy rights.
  • Other programs of special interest to Foundation donors.

These Funding Guidelines are for environmental grant requests. Please see the following guidelines for the Consumer Privacy Rights Fund and the Northern California Environmental Grassroots Fund:

Northern California Environmental Grassroots Fund Funding Guidelines

If you are interested in applying for a grant from the Northern California Environmental Grassroots Fund, see the Grassroots Fund's Funding Guidelines. No letter of inquiry is required.

Environmental grant applicants must first submit a letter of inquiry (LOI - step 1, below). This allows the Foundation to attempt to match the project with the appropriate fund.  LOIs for the summer grant round are due April 30.  LOIs for the winter round are due October 31.  Full proposals for the summer round are due May 31; full proposals for the winter round are due on November 30

Application Process

1) Submit a letter of inquiry of no more than two pages concisely describing the proposed project, its goals, time frame, funding need, and a brief description of the organization requesting funds. The Foundation accepts inquiries throughout the year. (Due April 30 and October 31)

2) After review of your letter of inquiry, you may be invited to submit a full proposal. Upon invitation to submit a full proposal, please explain your project in detail. Include the following:
    • Narrative project description.
    • Detailed project budget and most recent annual financial statement.
    • Timetable of activities (as appropriate).
    • Description of lead project staff.
    • Evaluation procedure.
    • IRS 501(c)(3) determination letter or acceptable documentation of fiscal sponsorship.

Incomplete proposals will not be considered. Foundation staff may require additional information on a case by case basis.

Full proposals must be postmarked by May 31st and November 30th of each year. Most grant awards range from $5,000 - $20,000.
