Environmental Grants

The Rose Foundation administers numerous environmental grants funds, including two separate grassroots-oriented funds in California; watershed-oriented funds in California, Washington and Oregon; and placed-based funds which generally operate on a county-specific level, as well as other specialized funds. Each fund generally has its own unique issue focus and/or geographic scope, and most funds have separate application processes. Prospective applicants should carefully review the following fund descriptions, and follow the application instructions for the fund which is the best fit for their program.

Applicants from small organizations, or those who have minimal experience applying for a foundation grant, should probably start by looking at the Northern California Grassroots Environmental Fund, the California Wildlands Grassroots Fund, or the grassroots grants element of the Puget Sound Stewardship and Mitigation Fund.

Grassroots Funds
Our Grassroots Funds award small grants to small community-based groups. Applicants' previous fiscal year's expenses must be $100,000 or less to be eligible. We currently have three grassroots funds in California and the Puget Sound.
California Watershed Protection Fund
The California Watershed Protection Fund accepts applications for projects designed to benefit the water quality and ecosystem of San Francisco Bay Estuary, the San Francisco-San Joaquin Bay/Delta, and tributaries to the Bay/Delta Water system. Based on available funding, the Foundation may also be able to accept proposals for projects related to the Russian River, Eel River, and Southern California watersheds.
Puget Sound Stewardship & Mitigation Fund
The Puget Sound Stewardship and Mitigation Fund is dedicated to protecting the water quality of Puget Sound. It has both a Watershed Grants element and a Grassroots Grants element.
The Mike Chappell Fund for the Spokane River
The Mike Chappell Fund for the Spokane River supports environmental project activities that will improve the water quality of the Spokane River Watershed.
Southeast Madera County Responsible Growth Fund
The Southeast Madera County Responsible Growth Fund was created to fulfill the intent of a settlement between the Madera Oversight Coalition and Castle and Cooke to encourage comprehensive environmental planning and responsible growth policies in Madera County.
Kern County Air Pollution Mitigation Fund
The Kern County Air Pollution Mitigation Fund fulfills the intent of a series of settlements between the Sierra Club and residential building developers in the Bakersfield area. It supports direct, pro-active projects in Kern County designed to reduce particulate or ozone air pollution.
Anthony Grassroots Prize
The Anthony Grassroots Environmental Prize was established by environmental activist Juliette Anthony in 1999. The Anthony Prize recognizes an outstanding example of grassroots environmental stewardship over the previous year with a $1,000 award.
